Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

We have an enjoyable year ahead for your child and we are sure that they will enjoy the topics that we are covering. Year 1 is the first year of Key Stage 1 and the children will be formally assessed every half term.

Children will be ‘set’ for their literacy RWI lesson and will receive spellings to learn weekly based on a particular sound with a few HFW/tricky words to learn also. Reading books will be changed twice a week. This will  be on a Monday and a Friday. Please make sure your child has read their books and that their reading records have been signed with any comments. We listen to the children read every day, as part of their Read, Write Inc lesson. We will also listen to the children read their home reader regularly and review their book level each term.

In June all Year 1 children will be assessed in their phonics ability through the compulsory government’s phonics screening check. This check will assess your child reading 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. For further information about this or to help your child at home please visit here: http://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/resources/parent-tutorial-phonics-screening-check/

Children will also be set Maths homework. This may be an activity to consolidate learning or a Mathletics activity which will be set on a weekly basis.

Thank you in advance for supporting your child with regular reading at home.

If you require any more information, please feel free to get in touch.
